Scan2CAD and MicroGDS offer hybrid raster/vector document maintenance
We may be in the computer age, but there are still a lot of paper drawings out there. And even when drawings are available in electronic form, there are many possibilities for raster and vector formats. This can be a nightmare for companies which have to maintain archives of drawings from many sources. Two Cambridge UK software development teams have joined forces to help out a leading international insurance company that has exactly this problem.
Softcover International Ltd develops Scan2CAD for capturing a drawing in raster format, editing it, and converting it fully or partly into vectors and text. Just down the road from them in Cambridge, Informatix Software International produce MicroGDS which can structure and edit vector based drawings, with an option to overlay the vectors on raster data. When Scan2CAD and MicroGDS were connected together, the two products fitted perfectly to give the user exactly the flexibility and workflow needed.
Chris Russon of Informatix explains: "Our client has around 350,000 drawings in various formats, with new projects arriving at a rate of up to 500 a week. At that volume, it is essential to find the optimum approach to converting and maintaining the drawings. Some parts of the drawing - such as fire equipment and hazards - are highly significant and need to be converted into an intelligent representation. Field operatives and specialist assessors need to mark-up the drawings. On the other hand it is not necessary or cost-effective to convert the whole of each drawing to vector format."
In a recent major purchase, Scan2CAD Pro has been added to the MicroGDS software already in use. After an initial pass to scan the paper drawings into a raster format, Scan2CAD is used to clean up the raster and convert as much as required to vectors. After that the user can switch to a vector world in MicroGDS but still see the raster information as a backdrop; or can go back to Scan2CAD to do further raster-based work whilst seeing the vector data as a backdrop. Both products are well equipped with interfaces to third party data formats, catering for those cases where the supplied data is already in a computer form.
"Softcover's collaboration with Informatix shows what can be achieved when two software companies pool resources for the benefit of a mutual customer. Together we have given one of the world's largest commercial and industrial property insurance and risk management organisations a new and cost-effective raster editing and raster to vector conversion solution which complements their considerable investment in the MicroGDS CAD program" says Steve Hannath, Softcover's marketing director.
"The combination of Scan2CAD and MicroGDS gives the customer a professional hybrid raster / vector document maintenance solution to facilitate the rapid redrawing of all or part of a scanned technical drawing. It's a simple, straightforward solution which, most importantly, exports the vectorised drawing directly to the user's familiar MicroGDS CAD environment where they can efficiently make the necessary edits."
The customer is certainly happy with the results: "We have been very pleased with the changes and improvements to Scan2CAD. The coordination between Softcover and Informatix Software International was instrumental to our decision. We found a real winner."
Softcover and Informatix are now co-marketing their products to other companies with similar needs. For more information email Informatix at info@informatix.co.uk or visit the Softcover website at www.softcover.com.

Piranesi 4 for Windows® is now shipping
Informatix Software International Limited is proud to announce that version 4 of Piranesi® - its award-winning '3D painting' technology - is now available. With Piranesi, designers can start with simple models and renderings, and quickly fill in details and create hand-drawn effects.
One of the most popular features of Piranesi is its ability to place 2D cutouts (elements of scenery, such as people or vegetation) into a scene, with automatic sizing and masking. With Piranesi 4, you can now place 3D models in your painting environment as 3D cutouts. These 3D cutouts can be viewed from any angle, ready for further rendering as required.
3D models suitable for use as Piranesi cutouts are available from an increasing range of sources - such as those available free on the internet from furniture manufacturers. 3DS, SketchUp, and DXF formats can all be used, and support for Archvision RPC models has been upgraded to give access to their latest models including 3D cars. New techniques for tweaking and assembling cutouts have been introduced, along with 3D text.
A lot of care has gone into making Piranesi 4 even easier and quicker to use. A new tool manager organises commonly used panels in a way that provides ready access whilst maximising the area of the screen available for painting work. Views can be zoomed by any factor, to obtain optimum use of screen and paper media. Experienced users will enjoy the new user-definable keyboard shortcuts. Beginners will welcome the range of written and movie tutorials, especially the new Quick Start tutorial.
Piranesi 4 contains a wide range of new effects. Piranesi is often used for interior or night time scenes, and new illumination fades allow spot or strip lighting to be easily mimicked. There are seven new filters to refine an image, and even the basics of painting with a brush have been extended - there's a new bristle brush, and brush dynamics which introduce selected random elements into the stroke to increase the 'hand painted' effect. Altogether over 100 enhancements have been made in Piranesi 4, many in direct response to user requests.
Last but by no means least, over 300 new cutout and texture images have been added to the thousands already available in Piranesi's library, plus new 3D sample models created by Archvision, SketchUp, and MicroGDS.
The Mac OS X version of Piranesi 4 is currently under development and the release timetable is yet to be announced.

Renderworks® 11 supports Piranesi®
The latest version of Renderworks contains a built-in interface to Piranesi.
Renderworks users can now use Piranesi to rapidly paint in textures and details such as people, furniture, or plants that are difficult to model. Perspective is handled automatically, as is obscuration where one detail passes in front of another. Piranesi users can also create a wide range of impressionistic styles that are visually appealing and promote discussion by drawing attention to what is important.
The key to Piranesi's operation is its EPix image format in which every pixel has a depth and material value as well as a colour. As a result of a collaborative project between Nemetschek and Informatix Software, Renderworks 11 can render directly to EPix format.
Dan Monaghan , Nemetschek's Marketing Director comments "Renderworks and Piranesi together cover the entire spectrum of 3D rendering possibilities. Together with the 3D modelling capabilities of Vectorworks, they provide a powerful and easy-to-use solution for architects and designers on the Windows and Macintosh platforms".

Piranesi launched on the Mac
The Mac OS X version of Piranesi, the award-winning "3D Painting" program from Informatix Software
International Limited, has been launched at Apple Expo in Paris.
With Piranesi for Mac OS X, designers can start with simple models and renderings, and use Piranesi's
patented "3D Painting" technology to quickly fill in missing detail and produce artistic,
hand-drawn effects. Piranesi images can be produced from 3DS or DXF models; in addition, many popular
Macintosh 3D applications such as Art*lantis, form*Z, and LightWave provide direct interfaces. SketchUp
version 3.1 (due later this year) will also have a direct interface, and other applications are expected
to follow suit.
"Since Piranesi was launched in 1998, we have received an ever increasing number of requests from
architects and designers who wanted a version of Piranesi that they could use on their Mac computers",
says Brian Woodward, managing director of Informatix. "We started work on the Mac version a year ago in
direct response to this need".
Piranesi has been completely re-engineered for Mac OS X. "Mac users want an interface that fits
consistently with their other Mac applications", said Brian Woodward. “We also wanted to take full
advantage of technologies available only on the Mac."
The Mac version of Piranesi contains a number of enhancements not yet available in the Windows version.
There are new multi-fill styles, automatic contrast adjustments, and improved support for pressure sensitive
pens. The style library technology has been reworked using XML. Floating cutouts can now be saved directly
into a Piranesi EPix file.
Piranesi has also benefited from unique Macintosh capabilities, such as built-in PDF export courtesy of
the Quartz Graphics Engine.
"Mac OS X enables an unparalleled rich computing experience through the power and stability of a
UNIX-based operating system, the cutting-edge graphics technologies and the breakthrough Aqua interface,
which make Mac OS X a perfect fit for the architectural and design industry," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's

MicroGDS UK User Group Conference
The MicroGDS UK User Group Conference was held on Friday 1st November at the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) in London.
A number of MicroGDS users were kind enough to give presentations. Paul
Collins (SBT) showed some splendid examples of the presentation drawings
he has made using MicroGDS, taking full advantage of MicroGDS's 2D
graphical capabilities and its ability to work with diverse other document types
such as raster files.
John Warburton gave a thoughtful lecture on how to get
the best out of working with libraries and instances, whilst Barry Clarke
(SBT) focussed on the key issues to bear in mind when translating to and from
AutoCAD. As ever, the golden rule is that a little forethought and
planning is well worth it in the long run!
Nick Ansley of Informatix gave his usual virtuoso performance of the
latest features in MicroGDS and Piranesi and how to get the best out of them.
All concerned found the day enjoyable and informative, and we hope to repeat
the event at the same venue next year.

MicroGDS 7.1 is announced
Informatix Software International Limited is pleased to announce version 7.1 of its MicroGDS CAD software. Shipments will begin in August.
A key strength of MicroGDS is that it integrates high precision 2D and 3D CAD capability, and plot layout and printing technology. Disparate data sets - MicroGDS drawings and frames, Word documents, spreadsheets, raster files - can be easily assembled and printed with no need to buy other software packages. MicroGDS 7.1 develops this strength further, extending MicroGDS's ability to combine data from different documents and introducing a number of new features which make it even easier to assemble sheets ready for WYSIWYG printing.
New techniques for associating attribute data with graphic objects, and filtering objects according to attribute values, have been introduced. The OpenDWG engine for DWG/DXF translation, and the LightWorks rendering engine, have both been significantly upgraded. The MicroGDS application interface is now .NET capable, and has been extended to provide access to all the new functionality as well as supporting a whole range of new programming capabilities.
Most of all, customers will appreciate the long list of enhancements requested by users, which collectively maintain MicroGDS's position as the most productive and powerful CAD tool available. Chris Russon, Managing Director of Informatix Software International Limited, comments: "As with all MicroGDS releases, our intention is to make our customers even more successful, rather than to follow the latest technology fad. There is no better way to do that than to listen to our customers comments and incorporate them into the product".

Piranesi 3 launch
Informatix Software International Limited is proud to announce version 3 of its award-winning Piranesi® software. With Piranesi, designers can start with simple models and renderings, and use Piranesi's patented '3D painting' technology to quickly fill in missing detail using photorealistic and hand-drawn effects.
One of the most popular features of Piranesi is the ability to place cutouts (elements of scenery, such as people or vegetation) into a scene. Piranesi automatically adjusts for perspective and masking where one part of the scene passes behind another. Piranesi 3 further develops this technology via a new Cutout Manager, which gives users more control over each individual cutout, and allows collections of cutouts to be reused on different renderings of the model.
Support for RPC® (Rich Photorealistic Content) cutouts, from ArchVision Inc, has also been added. RPC cutouts are supplied as a sequence of images, each taken from a different angle. You choose the angle you want - Piranesi will automatically select a different angle if the view is changed, or when casting shadows.
Piranesi 3 has extended its applicability in two significant ways. Firstly, you can now import a 2D image into Piranesi as a plan or elevation. In other words, your starting point for Piranesi no longer has to involve any 3D modelling at all. Secondly, Piranesi can now be used to paint cubic panorama movie files, suitable for use with free players such as Apple QuickTime®. The ability to pan up, down, and around a hand-rendered scene is quite stunning!
Many more enhancements have been added to Piranesi 3, ranging from improved wheel mouse support through to new filters like half-tone. Piranesi's sister product Vedute, which renders DXF or 3DS files into Piranesi format, has also had major improvements and remains free to Piranesi purchasers. Piranesi ships with 2000 free texture and cutout images.
"Piranesi is now firmly established as an essential tool in the design process, as witnessed by sales levels and by the increasing number of modellers and renderers which are interfacing to Piranesi", says Chris Russon, Managing Director of Informatix Software International Limited. "Our customers wanted to be able to use Piranesi in new contexts, and had some great ideas to improve the product. We're pleased to tell them we have accomplished both in Piranesi 3".

home offices, project site offices and mobile computer users.
A crucial factor in Hillier's decision to deploy the new version is the improved ability of MicroGDS 7.0 to
work on disparate data sets. "For a renovation to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey we found ourselves
wrestling with two different major axes - one for the existing building and one for the new wing", says
Bob Ritger, Director of Design Systems. "MicroGDS's new facilities for rotated viewports allowed us to
very quickly work with both wings without having to 'twist our heads around' to see and understand
the design as it played out on both axes."
MicroGDS 7.0 contains a number of user interface improvements that have been welcomed by Hillier's
CAD users. These include the 'Mini Window Editor', which allows common layer and window management
tasks to be performed without disrupting the on-screen layout; a new shortcut key capability; and many
improvements to the navigation system, including wheel mouse support.
"The myriad of new linestyle types has also had an early impact on our presentations, particularly with the
use of raster images as part of patterned filled lines", continues Bob. "In my opinion the numerous new
features will greatly improve the speed of operation to the point where this upgrade will yield a return
on investment in only a few months."

Scott Brownrigg and Turner celebrate 21 years of GDS
Remember Tektronix 4014 terminals, Prime mini-computers, and 16 Megabyte disk packs? Scott Brownrigg
and Turner, the international architectural practice, have fond memories of their first Computer Aided Design
system which was installed on July 25th 1980. They recently celebrated the 21st anniversary of the day CAD
arrived, complete with a cake in the shape and colour of one of those old disk packs!
SBT were the first customers of the GDS CAD system, and their decision to become pioneer CAD users
was rapidly vindicated when it was put to use on the Heathrow Terminal Four project. Immediately
seven sets of drawings were in production from the same data, to meet the needs of the packaging
of work under the management contract, a process that would have barely been possible by traditional
means.
The word was spread and many design practices, and even TV news crews, visited SBT's offices in those
first pioneering months. The following year a drawing of another project was submitted to, and accepted by,
the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and SBT took the then unprecedented step of taking along the plotter
and producing the drawing itself inside the Burlington House gallery!
Twenty one years on, the hardware has of course been upgraded many times and now consists of 70 seats
of networked Windows PCs. The software too has seen many upgrades, and in 1995 GDS was completely
replaced by the Windows version, MicroGDS, from Informatix Software International Limited. However, the
data lives on - those 1980 drawings are still available at SBT and can be opened using the current version
of MicroGDS.

MicroGDS 7.0 is released
Informatix Software International Limited is proud to announce release 7.0 of its MicroGDS CAD software.
MicroGDS is designed for users in the architectural, engineering, construction, and facility management industries.
MicroGDS 7.0 incorporates major enhancements to the user interface. The new Document Organizer provides
instant explorer-like access to layers, windows, styles, raster and library files and incorporates full drag and
drop capability. Dynamic zoom and pan is now supported via the mouse thumbwheel, and a new NavigateWindow
pans instantly across even the largest drawings. In 3D a brand new set of controls gives easy access to a
complete range of parallel and perspective projections. The status bars - like the menus - are now fully
customisable. Ease of use is further improved by a new HTML Help system.
MicroGDS now boasts the most sophisticated user-definable linestyle system in any CAD product. Any
MicroGDS object can now be used as part of a linestyle definition or character font. Users will also
appreciate the new colour and print controls, and view rotation capabilities.
All product versions now give full access to the MicroGDS 'Windows Phases and Photos' technology
for drawing layout and assembly. A new 'Compact3D' product option continues the MicroGDS tradition
of providing a range of price/functionality options, so that users only pay for what they require, yet
always have the option of upgrading.
MicroGDS made the headlines last year as the first CAD system able to export entire CAD files in XML
format. MicroGDS 7.0 registers another 'first' by becoming the only CAD system able to import its data in
XML format with 100% accuracy, opening up a wide range of data exchange opportunities. Meanwhile the
Application Programming Interface has been considerably expanded, reflecting the increasing use of
MicroGDS as a basis for developing Windows applications.
Managing Director Martin McGarry says: "MicroGDS 7.0 is our most comprehensive release to date.
We have continued to raise quality by selective re-engineering of the product, and by incorporating
many functional improvements in response to user feedback".

SketchUp and Piranesi offer next generation 3D modelling and rendering
3D modeling and rendering recently became a much more practical proposition for AEC professionals,
as a result of a decision by @Last Software (Boulder, Colorado) and Informatix Software International
Limited (Cambridge, UK) to link their respective products, SketchUp and Piranesi.
Driven by the growing need among design professionals for a more intuitive and accessible 3D conceptual
design program, SketchUp was launched in 2000, and immediately won a Best New Product award at the
AEC Systems 2000 Fall Show. The core of SketchUp's simplicity is an interface that allows the user to
simply draw the edges of the desired model in 3D space, just like they would using pencil and paper.
Intelligent inferencing capabilities automatically determine the nature of the lines and 'fills' shapes to
create 3D geometry. Not only is this approach to 3D more natural for those using traditional media, it is
also better suited to the loose, exploratory nature of conceptual drawing.
Piranesi® is now in its second release and embodies an award-winning and patented approach to
rendering based upon the Epix format, a variant of TIFF in which every pixel has a depth and material
value as well as a colour. Using Piranesi is like 'painting in 3D', combining the simplicity and freedom of a
paint program with the precision of an underlying 3D model. As a result of the new interface, it is now
easy to develop a model using SketchUp and then render views of it using Piranesi.
Martin McGarry, Managing Director of Informatix Software International Limited, comments: "For a
number of years now Piranesi has made the 3D rendering process easy, cost effective, and expressive.
However many AEC professionals were still put off working in 3D by the difficulty of constructing even a
simple model to begin with. SketchUp overcomes this obstacle, and in conjunction with Piranesi puts
working in 3D within the technical reach of any AEC professional."
Yasser Malaika, @Last Software's Director of Product Design, states that "Within the context of design,
SketchUp and Piranesi are extraordinarily complimentary. We've worked hard to make SketchUp the
simplest, most elegant solution for creating 3D content. By exporting directly to Piranesi's Epix format,
SketchUp users can now leverage the rendering skills they already have to quickly create stunning imagery.
At the same time, more design professionals than ever before can join those who have flocked to Piranesi
for its wonderfully expressive painting capabilities."
The Piranesi interface is included in SketchUp version 1.2, which is a free upgrade to users of SketchUp
1.0; a try-and-buy version is available from the @Last Software web site. A demonstration of Piranesi
itself is available from the Piranesi downloads page.

Piranesi plug-in now available for LightWave
Informatix Software International Limited have announced a new plug-in for LightWave[6] which
interfaces to Piranesi. The plug-in can be downloaded free from the downloads page.
Piranesi uses patented technology that enables architects, artists, and designers to quickly and
easily post-process images of 3D models. Its innovative approach - which combines the intelligence
of 3D modeling with the direct control, interactivity, and representational freedom of a paint program -
has led to worldwide awards and recognition.
"We would like to thank NewTek for their help in making this plug-in possible", said Martin McGarry,
Managing Director of Informatix Software International Limited. "We are delighted to add LightWave
to the ever-growing list of world class 3D modelling and rendering products which support Piranesi's
Epix format".
Charles Gaushell of Paradigm Productions in Tennessee has already been using the pre-production
interface between LightWave and Piranesi to good effect, with one of the resulting images
appearing in the New York Times. The basic model and rendering - in this case an office complex -
was carried out in LightWave, and then Piranesi was used to add details and additional scenery.
"Piranesi is great for this kind of work, it would have been time consuming to setup the large numbers
of trees and plants, not to mention the impact on rendering time. I have found it a useful tool for both
stylized renderings and as a post rendering entourage tool", said Charles.
You can see examples of Paradigm's work with Piranesi at www.2dimes.com/.

Launch of Piranesi 2 announced
Version 2 of the award-winning Piranesi™ software is now shipping. Piranesi 2 offers many major
new features and functions, as well as a user interface that has been refined in the light of
user feedback to further improve productivity. And, of course, it is even more fun to use!
The heart of Piranesi's technology lies in the EPix format it uses for images, which preserves
3D information in the image. Piranesi allows you to use familiar painting brushes and other
tools to develop your image, whilst handling 3D perspective and geometry as if by magic!
Version 2 adds more magic, now including the ability to calculate and paint reflections and
cutout image shadows. Orientation locking provides a useful new control for the selective
application of painting effects, whilst 3D brushes provide new "painting in perspective"
abilities. The range of effects has itself dramatically increased, with many new blend types,
fade effects, and filters both predefined and fully customisable.
Working closely with users has resulted in some major productivity boosters. Not only is there
now a configurable multi-step Undo/Redo, but an innovative "Re-apply" command makes
experimentation with different effects even simpler. A new "Tweaking" option allows textures
and cutouts to be roughly placed then accurately repositioned in the scene. Many other
improvements to the user interface will be immediately apparent to users.
Piranesi 2 has also made major strides in terms of its ability to work co-operatively with other
products. Many new input and output formats are available - in fact any Photoshop format plug-in
can now be used with Piranesi to import or save images in the format of your choice. Piranesi
continues to accept models in DXF, 3DS, or THF format via its free Vedute viewer, whilst an
increasing number of rendering programs are able to generate EPix directly.
